Which Books?

We have consulted children, parents, authors and teachers about their favourite stories for young children. These include obvious favourites (We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, The Tiger Who Came to Tea) with exciting recently published books (Z is for Moose, It’s a Book). The list of 500 Books will be updated regularly to provide authoritative guidance on ‘must-read’ books for young children that they will remember for many years to come. Our guiding principle reflects George Bernard Shaw’s maxim: ‘Make it a rule never to give a child a book you wouldn’t read yourself.’
